How to Get Around Costa RicaCosta Rica is a popular tourist destination for travelers from around the world, thanks to its lush landscapes.  Once you get to this tropical paradise, you will want to know how to get around Costa Rica.  The answer depends on where you are staying and what you want to do.  The major city of San Jose is the hub for the entire country, whether you are flying in or trying to take a bus to an outlying area.  Some things you need to know about getting around are:

  •  Buses are the way to go.  When it comes to how to get around Costa Rica, buses are readily available and inexpensive, although they may be a little slow.
  • There are two types of bus routes:  the colectivo and the directo.  Basically, these run like the familiar local and express type public transportation here in America although the directo may not be as direct as it sounds.  Both types of buses tend to be slow and crowded, but are an inexpensive way to get around.
  • Rental cars and motorcycles are readily available.  If you are staying in Costa Rica for an extended time, you may want your own transportation and a rental car is a good option.
  • Ferries connect coastal areas and peninsulas with daily and inexpensive service between these areas.

Of course, how to get around Costa Rica is not as important as the way you will spend your time.  If you are planning to stay near San Jose or in a coastal area, renting a bike for your stay could be the most enjoyable way to get around while you are visiting.
