Where to Eat in Costa RicaIf you are planning your trip, you are probably wondering where to eat in Costa Rica. It’s a great idea to first become acquainted with the local foods and diet of native Costa Ricans, also called “Ticos.”  Here are a few of the dishes you might find on the menus of Costa Rican restaurants:

  • The staple in Costa Rican diets is black beans and rice, as it is in much of Caribbean cuisine.  Often referred to as comida tipica, this simple dish is served for lunch or dinner with meat or fish.
  • When you are trying to find out where to eat in Costa Rica, you will want to keep in mind that they adhere to the more European custom of a large midday meal.  You may also find that portions are smaller than what is customary in the United States.
  • You may find a casado meal on a menu-this is simply a rice and beans dish accompanied by meat or chicken.  It’s the Costa Rican equivalent of an American “combo.”
  • The fruit in Costa Rica is as exotic as the landscape.  You will find plantains, pipas, starfruit and manzanas de agua in market stands and in restaurants.

For the adventurous eater, local restaurants will be the best place to eat.  With so many different vegetables and fruits than we are accustomed to seeing, it can be a great experience.  If you are trying to decide where to eat in Costa Rica and you want the familiar, you will be in luck in San Jose or the coastal towns where you can get pizza or even Chinese food!
